Fire extinguishers have been mandatory in most forms of motorsport for many years with many regulations stipulating systems that are plumbed in to disperse the extinguishant to the engine bay and cockpit. These plumbed in fire extinguisher systems are available in a range of sizes dependant on the type and class of race / rally they are to be used. Since the ban on the use of Halon as an extinguishant, most fire extinguishers in motorsport use a foam based extinguishant. Recently new gas extinguishers have been made available which provide better fire knockdown capabilities than the foam equivalent. This new non toxic, environmentally friendly gas has spawned the future of race / rally fire extinguishers and has been tried and tested by World leading motorsport teams in all disciplines.
