Harnesses which are used in motorsport are designed specifically to keep you secure in the seat and help prevent injury in the event of an accident. Unlike standard seatbelts, a race harness does not have an inertia reel as these allow for too much movement. Instead harness belts are bolted to the floor and clip into a central buckle. Adjustment straps allow for the harness straps to be tightened for a secure fit. Most race and rally events require a harness with an FIA approval. These race / rally harnesses have a rotary type quick release buckle which allows for easy release from the harness even if your full body weight is supported by it (eg if you are upside down in the car). The shoulder straps on FIA approved harnesses are 3" wide, which is wider than standard seatbelt webbing to give increased strength. FIA regulations also stipulate that harnesses also need to be attached to the chassis in a minimum of 4 places. These are known as a 4 point harness. They consist of 2 shoulder straps which attach at the back of the car and 2 lap straps which attach either side of seat. A 5 point harness has an additional strap called a crutch strap as this runs between the legs and fastens to the floor under the seat. A 6 point harness is similar to the 5 point harness but it has twin crutch straps which attach to 2 points on the floor under the seat.
Demon Tweeks offer a huge range of both FIA approved race harnesses and clubman type harnesses from leading brands Sabelt, Willans, TRS, Sparco, OMP, Schroth and Takata.
