About Oil System
|
Engine oil is the life blood of your engine which is why you should always choose the best quality oil you can. Engine oil not only provides essential lubrication it also prevents corrosion, cleans and aids cooling, all of which improve the life of your engine. Different engines generally require different specifications of oils which is why you will find such a wide choice of engine oils available. Engine oils are 'graded' in relation to their viscosity at a given temperature. Most modern day oils are multi grade which gives them the ability to keep their viscosity over a wider temperature range. An engine oils grade, sometimes referred to as the 'SAE' is shown as a number, or two numbers in the case of multi grade oils. These numbers are 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,40,50 & 60 with 0 being the lowest viscosity and 60 being the highest. The lower numbers are suffixed with the letter W which denoted thier 'winter' or cold starting viscosity so a 10w would be a single grade SAE 10 oil. A multi grade oil would be shown as 10W40 for example, the lower number denoting the winter grade and the higher number denoted the viscosity at 100 degrees C.
