Winter tyres are specially designed and manufactured to provide the best traction in the worst conditions. Not just snow, but cold and wet roads or any other winter condition where normal summer tyres struggle. The compound of the rubber means the tyres stay pliable in cold weather, and the tread design gives improved traction on wintry road surfaces. Note: Cold weather / winter tyres are generally rated with lower speed ratings than all-season tyres of equivalent sizes. For winter use, it is acceptable to mount tyres with a lower speed index of one level (letter) than equivalent size summer/all weather tyres. EG If the summer tyres have a speed index of W, winter tyres with a speed index of V can be mounted. Speed and driving style should also be adapted to within the constraints of the rating and conditions.
