Tachometers, or rev counters as they are more often referred to, are an important tool to help you get the best out of your engine. A rev counter gives you an indication of when to change gear, optimising the peak engine power and torque without over revving which could damage an engine. Modern rev counters are more sophisticated and often are equipped with gear shift lights (to indicate the optimum RPM at which to change gear), while some models have inbuilt data acquisition which records the RPM over a period of time to be viewed at a later time. This type of information can prove invaluable for working out gear ratios and other set up information.
As most modern race engines are built to run at their limits, an accurate rev counter is a must which is why manufacturers now use microprocessor controlled stepper motors to control needle movement. This gives the tachometer far better reaction times without any needle waver.
